I brought the finest bait I know, and dropped it where the big fish go.

If I were swimming down below, I would bite that thing — but what do I know?

The water does not make a sound. My float just sits and looks around.

Did one come near, then change its mind, or leave my lovely bait behind?

Perhaps they have eaten. Maybe not. Perhaps I picked the perfect spot—

For every fish except the ones I hoped would come and spoil my calm.

One minute passes. Then it is five. The waiting starts to feel alive.

Eine Minute wird zu zwei, fünf ziehen langsam auch vorbei.

Thời gian trôi rất chậm khi người ta ngóng chờ.

Five more minutes, maybe ten; I will give the fish a chance again.

Fünf Minuten. Vielleicht zehn. Mal schauen, was noch wird gescheh'n.

Một phút thành năm phút, năm phút dài như thơ.

Should I move on? Should I change the bait?

Soll ich den Platz wechseln, den Köder tauschen?

Hay đổi chỗ ngồi thôi? Hay thay một loại mồi?

Or sit right here and let them choose their own small hour, their own excuse.

Ach nein. Ich bleib noch hier und lass die Fische selbst entscheiden.

The sun still dances on the grass, a lazy breeze comes wandering past.

I stop demanding that my line must give me something for my time.

Some things seem slow when watched too near.
